Death Cab For Cutie — Narrow Stairs

Ok, so, I know I recently slated Death Cab for Cutie for their appalling gig, but I have finally bitten the bullet and listened to their latest offering.

Yes, the concert was a shambles but let’s forget that and move on to the album. I was bored, working at the computer and, having recently lost my entire iTunes library thanks to a computer failure, I was thoroughly annoyed. So I decided to download the new DCFC album and MY GOD IS IT GOOD!

Initial listening led me to believe that it was a tired and slightly underachieving effort, but I hadn’t given it a chance. The full version of ‘I will possess your heart’ is amazing; the five or so minute build up before the lyrics even kick in enhances the claustrophobic nature that the rather worrying lyrics convey. ‘Talking Bird’, an ode to his parrot, that may or may not be a methaphor for a relationship, I haven’t quite made my mind up on yet. The beauty of the song is that even if it is about a damn parrot, it’s still a perfectly crafted piece of work.

Yes the album has the odd song that you listen to without really taking in, ‘Long Division’ for example, but the songs that do stick out stick out so far you could see them from space.

Yet another fantastic offering from Death Cab. Oh and you’ll be pleased to know, he sounds nothing like James Blunt anywhere on the album.
